Clio Cup racing is now an established racing series and regular support race at the British Touring Car Championships at racetracks across Britain. Offering exciting wheel to wheel action, it is seen as an important stepping stone for many a driver with touring car aspirations.
Because the Clio is such a capable package to start with and to keep costs relatively low, the main modifications are safety and braking related. Each car is based on the Clio Renaultsport 200 developing 205bhp at 7300rpm and 223Nm of torque at 5550rpm. The regulations mean each clio has a bolt in roll cage, 6 speed sequential gearbox with steering wheel mounted shifters as well as a Limited Slip Differential. Huge ventilated discs and Brembo calipers up front provide the stopping power easily enough to stop such a light car at just over a 1000kg.
Formula One McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton’s brother Nicholas has recently taken to driving in the series this year. Nicholas, 19, who has cerebal palsy, has overcome a lot of issues to drive with the Total Control Racing team this season. He gained his racing licence and has impressed with his car control and determination.
